He received his BA in urban studies before going on to earn his MA and PhD in counseling psychology from the University of North Texas. He is a certified pain educator and a licensed psychologist. He is active in his field as a member of several organizations, including the American Pain Society, the American Academy of Pain Medicine, and the International Association for the Study of Pain.
