They often practice in coal and natural gas industry corridors, Appalachian communities, and academic-affiliated emergency departments. Many hold subspecialty training in toxicology, pediatric emergency care, or prehospital medicine. They commonly evaluate standards of emergency care, triage decisions, diagnostic workups, stabilization, transfer protocols, and time-sensitive treatment of stroke, cardiac, and trauma patients.
